A grand Christmas Community party for about 100 older people took place yesterday. It was organised by Balsall Heath Church Centre who put huge amounts of effort into making this a glorious occasion. People came from the local community, and Opnocs ( Older People’s New Oppportunites Consortium_) also brought a number of their members.
The hall was beautifully decorated , the tables were laid with pretty menu cards ,and crackers were popped.
The event started with Jacqui on the accordion to prompt us all into Christmas carolling. Next up was Dorett with a TV programmes musical quiz, with lavish prizes for the winning tables. Then a large contingent form Clifton School arrived to entertain us with a rousing collection of Christmas songs, which were very jolly .
By now, it was time for the highlight of the day- a three course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, cooked by the Jericho project. It was no easy task to serve the food to so many people but they did it splendidly with great good cheer. Meanwhile Rev Paul Lecky was circulating with a lovely jar of sweets, inviting us to guess how many were in the jar. I believe the guesses ranged from 80 to over 1000. The real answer I will not reveal- in case anyone else is doing the same game at another event.
Last ,but by no means least, was Norman the Steel Pan Maestro who was very much appreciated and some of the sprightlier of the crowd leapt to their feet for dancing. The event finished with the raffle draw, with a great tableful of prizes being distributed to lucky winners.
A big thank you to the Church Centre who arranged it all and who had decorated the hall, and laid attractive tables with pretty seasonal menu cards.
