Otherwise Summer School

Bookings have now opened for The Gap’s ‘Otherwise Summer School’.

What is The Other~Wise Summer School?

Welcome to The Other~Wise Summer School, a free yearly programme of creative workshops, cultural activities and critical conversations for ages 15 – 21, developed by The GAP and young people from our youth forum, The Culture Collective.

Each year we choose a topic that we feel is important and relevant to young people’s lives and the world we live in but is lacking in mainstream education, whilst also experimenting with the creation of an inclusive, community-centred and liberatory learning space that seeks to challenge the often oppressive approach of mainstream schooling.

What is this year’s theme and content?

This year’s theme is Resistance Against Colonialism, with a focus on the history of resistance against colonialism in Africa, Asia and the Americas. Over one week we will be exploring different ways of how we learn about history with the opportunity to exchange with students and teachers from Burkina Faso and Panama and learn about how to encourage other young people to discuss and take action on issues happening in the world. We’ll work together during the week to find out about current and historic struggles against colonialism, engaging with a variety of creative and cultural forms including zine-making, clock-making, flag-making, films, drama, dance, music, and more. At the end of the week we will have the chance to share with friends, family and members of the community what we have learnt. We know where we’re from, and we know where we’re going!
