Call out for children to take part in free performance workshops and be part of a new artwork

Eastside Projects, an art gallery in Digbeth, is looking for a small group of Year 6 children – ie children who are moving from Primary to Secondary school this summer – to take part in free performance workshops at the MAC as part of ‘Best Lives’, a new art project by artist Alice Theobald which will explore what “living my best life” means at different ages, what influences our views on the kinds of lives we admire, and how we think about success and failure.

The young people will spend four mornings with Alice being creative, trying out new performance exercises, developing improvisation skills, collaborating with each other, making up stories, using their imaginations, and generally having fun whilst exploring the themes.

We’ll use play, acting and improvisation to celebrate moments of success and share future dreams, and we’ll also explore where things have been trickier or haven’t gone so well and how these experiences can make us stronger.

The workshops will be at MAC Birmingham, they are free and lunch, drinks and snacks will be provided. We can also help with travel costs.

  • Children must be able to attend all four sessions on
  • Wednesday 24 July, 10am – 12.30pm
  • Thursday 25 July, 10am – 12.30pm
  • Wednesday 31 July, 10am – 12.30pm
  • Thursday 1 August, 10am – 12.30pm

The workshops will be filmed and some of this documentation will be used by Alice in a new film/artwork which she is developing over the next six months working with different groups. The film will be shown at MAC Birmingham and Eastside Projects in 2025, and potentially in other galleries and cultural spaces in the future.

You’ll find all the info about the project and how to register your child at https://eastsideprojects.org/projects/best-lives-open-call/
